Carmarthen Journal Article on 30 October

FAIR Trade supporters in Ammanford put their best walking boots to good use last week, just weeks after winning the Most Creative Campaign.
The Carmarthenshire Fair Trade Group was given the award, which recognises the work of local Fair Trade supporters in establishing and walking the 26-mile Carmarthenshire Fair Trade Way, by the Fair Trade Foundation.

The inaugural walk was first launched in June, and last week walkers brave high winds and torrential rain to complete the trek from Ammanford to Swansea.
Local schoolchildren also showed their support for Fair Trade by walking through the rain to give the walkers are a warm send off.
Pupils from Ysgol Gymraeg Rhydaman and Ysgol Bro Banw made Fairtrade banana smoothies for the walkers on a special bicycle powered smoothie maker at the start of the walk in iSmooth Community Cafe in Ammanford.
While children and staff from Ysgol Parcyrhun braved the pouring rain to come out and cheer on the walkers as they passed by their school.
Before making their way through Carmarthen and on to Swansea.
Phil Broadhurst of the Ammanford Fair Trade group and organiser of the walk said the second Fair Trade Way event was a big success.
"The Carmarthenshire walk was a fantastic day of inspiring campaigning, spreading the Fairtrade message as we walked."
The new route from Ammanford to Swansea is part of a growing network of Fair Trade Way walks around the UK which links Fair Trade towns and cities. The initiative, which is aimed at highlighting the work of Fair Trade, is supported by the Co-operative and also by the Welsh Government through Fair Trade Wales.

INAUGURAL WALK OF THE AMMANFORD-SWANSEA FAIR TRADE WAY. WEDNESDAY 16th OCTOBER 2013.

Following the success of the walk along the Carmarthenshire Fair Trade Way from Ammanford to Carmarthen, we are now walking the stretch from Ammanford to Swansea.
The walk uses stretches of St Illtyd’s Walk, The Gower Way, National Cycle Way 4 and The Coastal Path. Contact Phil at riversidepicnic@yahoo.co.uk if you’re interested in joining us.
Wednesday 16th October is World Food Day 2013, the theme of which this year is “Sustainable Food Systems for Food Security and Nutrition”.
More details at http://www.fao.org/getinvolved/worldfoodday/‎

Our walk will link in with this theme, locally and internationally, from making Fairtrade Banana smoothies on a bicycle powered smoothie machine in a local community cafe, to hopefully linking up through skype with Fairtrade producers around the world.

Plans for day :
9am – Gather at iSmooth community cafe, College Street, Ammanford.
Fairtrade banana smoothie making with iSmooth’s bicycle powered smoothie maker.
Walkers leave 9.30am. Supporters continue making smoothies!
1pm ish – Lunch stop at Pontarddulais Co-Op.
4.30ish – Afternoon Tea at Bikeability http://www.bikeabilitywales.org.uk
7ish – Arrive at Environment Centre, where members of Swansea Fairtrade Forum will be hosting a shared meal event from 5pm, and will provide refreshments for walkers. LUSH Fairtrade Foot Cream will also be available for foot massages!

The first part of the walk from Ammanford to Pontarddulais includes a long climb. (Although, if it is a particularly misty morning, we will stick to a lower valley route). From Pontarddulais to Swansea is flat; mainly on cycle ways.
If you don’t want to do the full walk, easy places to join in/drop out, in terms of being easily accessible by regular buses are Pontarddulais and The Junction at Blackpill (where the cycle path comes out to the coast).
We are trying to arrange skype links with one or more Fairtrade producers along the way… More details on that, and other exciting developments soon!
